Celebration – Inspiration - Communion
Luke 19:37-38 – And when he was come nigh, even now at the (1) descent of the mount of Olives, the (2) whole multitude of the disciples began to (3) rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they have seen; Saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest.
The second point is the whole multitude of the disciples. This in not only the twelve that walked with him, but all those that have encounter Jesus along his journey and have decided to follow after him. We sometimes only think of the disciples as that elite group that followed Jesus closely. Yet, here Luke makes a point to let us know that there are others that have been given the opportunity to be followers of Jesus. We too can be counted in the multitudes of the disciples that rejoice at the presence of the king. For it is through Jesus that all can become disciples, the opportunity was not cut off after the 12. The opportunity of salvation is offered freely to all regardless of gender, race or age. All can join together to become the multitude of disciples, all can join together in worship, and all can join together in the remembrance of what Jesus did. This is Luke pointing to what Jesus would do because of the crucifixion; open up the Gospel to all men.
“ And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me." This scripture also reminds us from Luke of how we can all join together in remembrance of what Jesus did. He gave himself for our transgressions and he tells us to come and partake of him so that our bodies will bear the witness that we are a part of him. The whole multitude, all God’s people have relationship, spiritual union with Christ and we celebrate this in union as the multitude rejoiced in unity of purpose.
