4. The fourth step is making marriage a priority.
5. The fifth step in praying for one another.
6. The sixth step is to remove all out clauses.


Sometimes when I talk to married people, they have a "out clause" in case things do not work. The belief (often among saved people) is if things do not work out and I am not happy, I can get out of the marriage and try again.


This is a dangerous belief to have, especially as a believer. This is not the guideline for marriage as set forth by God. Yes, I know that there are some situations that causes individuals to leave (safety purposes for example). This is however, not the truth for every marriage.

What God calls for the believer is to give their marriage over completely to him. When we do, we serve a greater purposes of showing the world what God is capable of doing for those that love him. God gives us hope and if we trust him there are a few steps he gives for us so that we can hold onto that hope. The first thing is we need to remember our spouses are human and they are touched with the selfishness of the human. The second thing we must remember is we too are humans and if we want to be forgiven for our wrong choices, we should be ready to forgive. The third and last thing is we should remember that God can change every situation.

We must seek God to keep our marriages strong. This is why we must remove all out clauses or defeat clauses. Are you ready to allow God access to your marriage?

The Week in Review



The preparation for the marriage doesn't end when the wedding activities are over. In fact, the work is just beginning.

I can only speak for myself, but I have found that often times when things have gone wrong, I would sometimes forget to pray. Oh, I would say, "Lord, look at what is happening to me" or I would tell my friends about the situations. But I really didn't go to God in prayer.



I am thankful for God's grace and how he teaches us what is right for us to do. What I have learned in the 26 years of marriage is that when things are not going as I would want, I should take it to God in prayer, FIRST.
I have found that sometimes my disappointment comes not because things are wrong, but because I have allowed myself to slip in the first step as listed before. I have become disappointed because I have looked to my husband as my source of happiness and joy, and in doing so, I have become disappointed.



So I must go to God in prayer so that he can first get my vision back on the right path. When he does that, then I can pray and ask God that both my husband and myself are doing as he has instructed us to do.





There is something that is also important for us regarding what we invest in our marriages. We need not wait until things go bad before we pray, but instead we should pray daily that God would help our spouses be the husband or wife he has called them to be. We should pray for their strength at work and against the temptations that would come and try to defeat them. We should pray that God would grant them the ability to stand no matter what comes their way.



When you and I invest in our marriage, we do more than just seek what we can get out of it. We seek to invest in our spouses ability to be successful God's way. So let us remember that if we want a good marriage, we need to first seek God for the source of our happiness and joy. We also need to seek God for what his call is for us within our marriage.



We then must have a forgiving heart because our spouses are human and as people we will not always get everything right. We then must put our marriage as a priority and one way to do that is to seek God for the development of our marriage and as individual people. When we do this, we can see our marriages becoming what God planned for them to be.

4. The fourth step is making marriage a priority.

Often times marriages find themselves in times of trouble because of the lack of care that was invested in the marriage. It does not hit you quickly but if you are so busy with other things, the lack of investment in ones marriage can slowly creep up on you and you can find yourself going in different directions. When you final pay attention, it is sometimes past repair (not in God's eyes but in our own).

As mothers, we often focus on the children, house, work and a list of other task and chores. All of these things are important and need our attention. However, so does the investment into our marriage. Our husbands were here before the children, and all the other task. If we do not continue to invest in the marriage when the children are gone we will find ourselves married to a stranger if the marriage hasn't completely dissolved before then.

Men, before the pursuit of careers, business ventures, hobbies, and other things, there was your wife. If you allow other things to take first place in your life, how do you expect your wife to feel loved when she is always standing next in line behind something else?

This is why the word of God instructs us about some important roles. Husband are to love their wives. This love is shown by placing her before all the other pursuits in your life. This is why the word tells us to respect our husbands. How do we expect our husbands to feel loved if we never have a place for them and our complaints are always about what he is doing wrong and how he isn't meeting our needs?

That is why we have to go back to the first point, finding our happiness and joy in God. Once we find our joy in God then we can focus on being the best we can be in our marriage. I can be the best wife and pray to God when my husband isn't being the best husband and vice verse.
You must make it up in your mind that you will invest in your marriage. If you want your checking account to grow, you cannot not neglect it and expect it by some act of God to grow. You didn't put anything in! It is the same with marriage. You must invest time, effort, prayer, care, love and a listening and forgiving ear and heart. When you invest these things into your marriage, you will be able to see the result of your investment. I know the hardest time to believe this is when you are the only one investing in the marriage.

What if your spouse isn't investing, but you are? That is where your prayers come into play. You can go to God and ask him to correct what is wrong. You can go and ask him to because you are being faithful and God says he is faithful to the faithful. You can trust that God will help you through those difficult times in your marriage. Week in Review

This is my father, my stepmother and one of my older brothers. Do you see the family resemblance? That should be the same with our father, God. We should resemble him.

There are many that believe you cannot forgive someone once you have been hurt. Yet, we must always be ready to be forgiving. In relationships, especially marriages we will find ourselves letting each other down even when this is not our intention. We will find ourselves hurting those that we love.


What are we to do then when we face these difficulties in marriage? We must first look are ourselves before God. When we were not saved (and even in our Christian walk) we have hurt God. How did we hurt God? Our sinful behavior and disobedience to what is right, hurts God.



When you and I come to the realization that we have hurt God we go to him and ask for forgiveness. God is waiting in anticipation for us to come and ask for forgiveness. So as quickly as we ask, he is ready to forgive.
I remember when I prayed the offender’s prayer regarding my husband. The Lord impressed upon my heart to not only ask God to forgive him for the offense he had done then, but to forgive him for whatever offenses he would do. God showed me why. He showed me that he not only forgave me at the time of salvation but he has forgiveness awaiting me even for those things that I have not done yet. So he let me know that he would be quick to forgive and I should do likewise.



In order for a marriage to have success we must invest in the art of forgiveness. We must be willing to forgive because forgiveness was offered to us. When you are willing to forgive you reap the benefits of how God can bless your marriage as well as the benefits of your spiritual growth in Christ. Some may worry, but what if the offense is so great? My answer to that is, there anything to hard for God? We simply have to be willing to forgive and then let God direct us.

Last week, we ended with the understanding that our true happiness comes from God and not in things, accomplishments or even our marriages. So we see the first step to investing in our marriage is:


1. The first step in investing in our marriage is to seek our happiness and joy from the right source.


So what then is the purpose for marriage, if it is not to make me happy? Marriage is not just some good idea that man thought of. God ordained marriage in the beginning, between a man and a woman. He created marriage, for His purposes. Genesis 2:18-25 shows that God didn’t want Adam to be alone in the Garden. God said Adam needed a helper. God then brought all the creatures before Adam to name. When Adam was finished, there was no suitable helpmate, so God put him to sleep and created woman. I always wondered why God did it this way. I believe that God knew that Adam needed a helpmate, but God also wanted Adam to realize it, so he had him name all the creatures and realize there was no one for him in the bunch. I bring this point up really for the singles. God made Adam realize he needed a mate, and then he brought the woman to Adam. Scriptures says that a MAN that finds a wife, finds a good thing. So who’s looking for a spouse? The man.


Too many Christian women are looking too hard to find a mate. It is your responsibility as the single woman to wait on the Lord and follow what he would have you do with the “time of singleness” you have. If he has a mate for you, then God will show the man you are the wife for him. And even if and when God does show you who your mate will be (to the women), it is not your job to go and get him told. If he hasn’t approached you yet, then that means God hasn’t shown him, when he does, don’t worry, he will make his way to you.


Also, this shows us that God ordained marriage from the beginning. He has a reason and a purpose for marriage. His purpose for marriage is to reflect some profound spiritual principles. God shows ORDER in His ordaining of marriage. Scripture tells us that men are the head, just as Christ is the head of the church. Now many women don’t like this and many men misuse it. This does not mean the man is to rule over his wife or family with terror. It means just the opposite. When we look at what Christ as the head of the church did then we understand that position much better. What did Christ as the head of the church do? First He died for the church, to present the church without stain or blemish. He gave Himself to make her holy, cleansing her to present her to himself as a radiant church. So then husbands are to love their wives. That would seem obvious, so why does God put it in his word. Because he knew what the woman’s make up was. That she, the wife, needs to not only hear “I love you”, but to see it in action. Here God is telling the husband to put his love for his wife in action. Christ died for the church. Meaning he gave up his right to life, he hadn’t done anything deserving of death, but he willing took it on. So husbands ought to do the same. Husbands should willingly give up there right, but put the wife’s needs upfront. Now ladies, don’t amen me too quickly. I have to tell you that women are not always following God’s rules correctly either.


Scripture tells us that women are to obey their husbands. That wives ought to submit to the husband as the head, just as the church should submit to the head, Christ. This does not mean that you only submit when he, your husband is doing everything just the way you want. It means you must submit at all times. Scripture also tells us to honor, and respect our husbands. Why does God put that in his word? It seems like it should be a no-brainer. Well I have found that when God repeats things in his word it is because it is a point that he really wants us to get a good grasp on. Men are built that way. Respect and honor are one of the things that show our husbands we are in agreement with them. And how can we walk together unless we are in agreement?


How does respect show itself? It shows itself by us not bad talking our husbands. We don’t call them out in public or in front of the children, because then that will destroy the respect of the children for the father. We don’t let others disrespect him in front of us. We show our affection to him, by giving him words of appreciation for the things that he does and simply because he’s our husband. We submit to his decision on matters that we discuss together. I put a footnote here. I can’t submit to a decision, if I’m not involved in the decision making process. The Bible tells us that we are equal heirs to the kingdom. That also tells me I am in equal partnership with my husband. He doesn’t make rushed decisions for us without first coming to me and including me in the process. We talk together, we pray together and we even give our ideas together. The final decision is made and we are in agreement. As the head, the husband does have the final decision. But because the husband is functioning as Christ did, giving himself for the church. The husband will make his final decisions that will be good for everyone, and not just himself.
We as wives also have to understand (as well as the men) what being the head really involves. To be the head, you have the responsibility for the entire body. Christ is the head of the church. It is through the head that everything must go, we can’t have two heads, then we are a deformed body. I’m not a doctor, but I know that everything functions because of the head. The head is where the messages are sent from for the body to move. The hand can’t move without the brain first sending the message for it to move. And if the brain is malfunctioning, then those messages aren’t being sent. What am I trying to say? Christ as the head tells us how to function. Who will do what, who has what gift and how we should function. God isn’t a God of confusion, so things work in an orderly fashion. Then what does this say about marriage? As the head, the husband has to functioning properly for his entire family to do what each should be doing. The father/husband is control central. It is the husband’s responsibility to teach, to discipline, to encourage, to help each member function within their role. If the wife is to function within her role as wife and mother, it is the father’s responsibility to equipped her to do so. How do you do that? Only your wife can tell you that. It is your responsibility as the head to make sure your children are functioning in their role. What is their role? Their role is to obey you and listen to you, to grow in their understand of Godly things and to show respect to authority. (Yours, Gods and that of others) As the head you have to be engaged to know what is going on. Also, just as God encourages us, you read it over and over again in the word, “be of good cheer”, “Be not afraid” and so on. God is always trying to encourage us to good works and to trust in Him. Parents, we are our children’s first glimpse of a relationship with God (especially fathers). If we are showing love to our children (listening to them, comforting them, correcting them in love and patience, giving them a hug to show our love and concern) we show them a glimpse of what a relationship with a heavenly father looks like. If we are brutal, if we are uncaring or very critical, it is so much harder for our children to see God as a loving father, but one that they can’t every live up to. The word tells us ‘fathers don’t provoke your children to anger (mother’s too). What could you do to anger your children? When you are unloving or uncaring or even if it appears that way, you frustrate the child.


So why do I write all this? For this one reason, God has a purpose for us. If we seek Him and follow His directions, then our lives become a light to others. As Christians, both married and single, we need to make sure that our lives are a beacon to others. Does our marriage reflect what God wants it to show? Does it show others that two people can come together and function almost as if they are one person? Yes each part has distinct personality, but yet they still come together and agree as one. Does our live show to the world that Marriage is a good thing that God created or does it not look any different from marriages of the world? Does our marriages reflect before our youth something to be desired, something wonderful, or does it just reinforce what the world message is, be with somebody you want at anytime, because marriage is boring and unattractive. We (believers) have to counteract the wrong images that the world portrays. We can only do that if we are doing it God’s way. So to our singles, we can be an example of what a Godly marriage looks like.


So my prayer today is that God will continue to work on our marriages, so they look more and more like what He had planned and that those that are seeking marriage, that they would understand before they marry, what God expects from them. And to those that have work to do, know that it is God’s pleasure to give us the wisdom we need to be what he has ordained us to be in our marriages. If your spouse isn’t functioning as the head or your wife isn’t being submissive, that doesn’t mean you can relinquish your responsibilities. It is the contrary. You are to function just as God told you to and it is through your obedience that the “unsaved” (or disobedient) spouse can be won.

Often times we, as married people are so busy with life that we neglect the importance of investing in our marriage. We become busy with life and we may soon find ourselves married to a stranger. How do we fight against growing apart?

50% of marriages will end in divorce. While this is a projection, it is said to be close to the norm. The Barna Group statistics show that Christian marriages are slightly higher than any other faith. However, those that have marital counseling before they are married are more likely to survive. It is said that out of those marriages that have counseling 1 in 39,000 will end in divorce that is 0.000256 percent.

We have all heard the saying, a family that prays together, stays together. This saying has much truth in it. It is important that married people spend time in the Word to help them with right expectations. This is one of the greatest weapons, I believe, the enemy uses to destroy us. If we have false expectations about what our spouses should do for us, we begin to doubt if this is the person we should be married to. The first thing we can do to protect our marriages is look to God and ask him what should be our expectations. We would quickly find that our spouses are not to be the source of our joy and happiness.

Yes, we promise in our vows that we write to do everything to make each other happy, but it is a promise we are not able to keep. No matter what you do to try to make your spouse happy you will fall short. The reason is our total happiness should not come from each other. Our true happiness has to come from God. When we seek God for our joy and happiness, this is what makes us “full”. When we are full (like a pitcher of water) then whatever is added to the pitcher is the overflow. So when my husband is home on time, it is the overflow, when he’s late, I’m still full so it does not take away from my fullness.

“and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.” (Ephesians 3:19). When we understand and know the love of God, this is what will fill our lives to the fullness of God. Is there anything fuller than that?

Lord, today I pray for marriages. Help us to invest wisely in our marriages by first allowing you to work in us your fullness. Help us to bring ourselves to you so that you can accomplish in us what needs to be accomplished. Help us to find our source of joy and happiness in our fellowship with you. When we do, then we have much to offer in marriage. Amen.
